Tongpan Island is about six nautical miles from Makung, or 20 minutes by boat. It is named after its shape of a barrel. The pillar shaped basalt rock formations that create a unique attraction in the Yellow Stone National Park of U.S. are even more evident in Penghu. The entire island is surrounded by these basalt rock formations, making it the island with most basalt rock formations in all of Penghu. The cliffs of these rock formations make them even more magnificent.
The waters around Tongpan are also rich in fish. Colorful tropical fish swim among the coral reefs, forming a charming picture under the sea and making it the paradise for divers.
The Fuhei Temple is one of the most famous temples in Penghu, with intricate architecture with golden plated exterior. Though situated in a far away corner at sea, it has a unusually large number of worshipers.
